Be Here: Five Things We Love About Concord

With a welcoming downtown and a growing global food scene that reflects the vibrant culture of the city, Concord is a staple in Contra Costa County. Here are just five of the many reasons we’re proud to call Concord home.

  1. Mount Diablo. Did you know that Mount Diablo has one of the largest views of the Earth’s surface, second only to Mount Kilimanjaro? Even more of a reason to go for a hike and take in the view. From the wildflowers and flowing streams in the spring to the golden trails of summer to the crisp air and golden foliage in the fall to the snow-kissed peak in the winter, Mount Diablo is the geographic center of our region. And with many trailheads in Concord, there is easy access for hikers to enjoy the flora and fauna that populate the mountain.
  2. Todos Santos Plaza. If Mount Diablo is the geographic center of our region, then Todos Santos Plaza is Concord’s heart. It beats strong during the summer Music and Market Series, when thousands of people descend on the plaza for picnics and free concerts, surrounded by one of the East Bay’s finest farmers’ markets. But even on quiet days, the Plaza is a serene escape from the bustling city that surrounds it. And the children’s playground makes it a great stop for moms, dads and other caregivers who need a break from shopping.
  3. Global Cuisine Scene. Concord is home to many, which is reflected mostly in the global cuisine offered around town, from Gen Korean BBQ to Las Montaña’s super market to The Mediterranean café. And for fresh fish — including live oysters and crabs — try out 99 Ranch Market, located in the Park & Shop Center. And Concord Produce, on Detroit Ave. across from Costco, offers the best prices on fresh produce in the area.
  4. Shopping Centers. Speaking of shopping, Concord is home to three major shopping centers that attract patrons from all over the East Bay. Sunvalley Mall is the venerable one-stop shop for most gifts, clothing and jewelry, especially during Back-to-School and the holiday season. Just across I-680, The Willows Shopping Center houses REI and Any Mountain for sports enthusiasts, as well as The Jungle playground for families. And with such restaurants as Lazy Dog, Benihana, Eureka!, Claim Jumper and Krispy Kreme, it’s becoming a diner’s delight. Meanwhile, Concord’s newest shopping center, The Veranda, is located just down Diamond Boulevard from The Willows and is home to Cost Plus, Old Navy, Peet’s Coffee and a state-of-the-art IMAX theater.
  5. Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corp. Not every city that can sport an 18-time World Champion Bugle Corp. Blue Devils Performing Arts offers young men and women between the ages of 7 and 25 high quality educational and performance experiences in the areas of musical and dance performance. Founded in 1957, BDPA’s objective is to develop personal character through challenging physical, emotional, mental, and social activities while promoting the values of dedication, hard work, and commitment to a team effort. Over 450 young people currently participate in BDPA programs, and over 8,000 young people, in 2,000 families, have been served by the BDPA organization since 1957. Drumroll, please.
